Training

We propose to construct leading-edge videobased educational materials for quickly training a new HIT professional workforce nationwide. The content will be based on presentations and materials prepared specifically for this purpose by the country's leading experts in each topical area. Our team members at Harvard's Medical School, School of Public Health, and College will both provide content and recruit content from top experts elsewhere. Our instructional design team members will work with content providers to assure consistency and appropriateness. Our criteria for teaching-learning materials are captured in our acronym, CAMEL: Configurable Active Multimedia Electronic Learning.

C

Configurable: Given videobased lectures, slides, student activities, teaching guides, and a menu of curriculum topics, our technology will allow instructors to customize courses, based on their choice of topics, time, format, and instructional level.

A

Active: Student "follow-up" exercises may occur within or outside lectures, and may be group (role-playing, debate, case study, cooperative exercises, competitions) or individual (automated question answering, simulated chat with fictional students).

M

Multimedia: Content presentation will integrate text slides with video and/or sound, providing multi-modal formats to reduce the cognitive load on the learner.

E

Electronic: All materials will be in generic formats suitable for national electronic distribution.

L

Learning: Our CAMEL approach promises the best of technically enhanced learning, distribution, and adaptation. Each lesson will include statements of instructional objectives, virtual lectures with narration, test questions to assess mastery, and extra reference materials and educational experiences.

Our team members include community colleges, regional exchange organizations, hospitals, health IT manufacturers, and CIO's, who through workshops, surveys, and on-line meetings will provide feedback on our materials throughout the development process.
